Can you explain spinal disc decompression? How can it help me?

Shown to help patients suffering from disc abnormalities (bulging, herniated, degenerative and/or ruptured discs), sciatica and failed back surgeries, spinal disc decompression is available at Arizona Pain Specialists and offers patients a non-surgical alternative to pain relief. Disc bulging and herniation occurs when disc material is compressed by vertebra and causes the disc to press against nerves near the spine. The irritation caused by the bulging disc material causes severe and often debilitating pain.

Patients are in control of the treatment and are able to stop should any discomfort occur. However, most patients report no discomfort, and sometimes are able to fall asleep during the decompression. You will remain fully clothed and will be lying on a table specifically designed for disc decompression. The FDA-approved equipment used at Arizona Pain Specialists includes the therapeutic table and a computer connected to that table to electronically control your treatment. While resting comfortably on the table, a padded harness will create gentle force along your spine.

By using this decompression, negative pressure similar to a vacuum is created, allowing that disc material that is crowding the nerves to be drawn back into the disc, removing the painful pressure from the nerves.

The sessions include multiple cycles of decompression and relaxation. Each cycle will last approximately 3 to 5 minutes, and your entire session should last approximately 15 to 20 minutes, but may be longer or shorter depending on your needs. A patient typically needs multiple spinal disc decompression treatments, but often feels significantly better early in their treatment process.
